Laura De Marchena (president of Osito, Inc.):
I am a 22 year old woman, born in the United States of America, and given life by two Cuban parents. From an early age my mom and grandparents, Apu and Abita, strove to keep the memory of their homeland alive in my heart, and not a day goes by that I don't think about my roots.

Having grown up in Miami I was very fortunate to be surrounded by Cubans that helped keep this wonderful culture alive.

Unfortunately, recent memories of Cuba are not happy ones. Both my grandparents and parents made it a point, to tell me stories of misery, suffering, and tragedy that ended the life they had once known. My knowledge of Cuba doesn't end only with my family; my interest in the subject propelled me to read vast numbers of books written by Cubans about the unimaginable devastation.

I am proud to be Cuban-American and sympathetic for all the Cubans that had their rights taken away.

It is so hard to understand why anyone would want to treat humans in such a fashion, but unfortunately it is still happening.

Although my grandparents are no longer alive, their spirits live within me. The pain and suffering that my family has endured does not die easily and continues to move me toward change. Even though my grandparents never saw a change in Cuba, it is not to late for us to join together and take a stand.

One day I hope that I can see Cuba as it once was. I long for a day in which I can finally see my family history before my very eyes.
